Alhaji Musa Mustapha is the new Executive Secretary, Yobe State Scholarship Board, Damaturu. In this interview with Mohammed Abubakar, he explained the transformation process at the board to ensure that all Yobe State indigenes benefit from scholarship scheme within and outside the country. Excerpts:

Having taken charge as Chairman of the scholarship board, what are you bringing on board?

We have commenced the process of transformation on assumption of office. The process has begun for adjustments and changes that ushered in a period of transparency and accountability in managing the board. As I am talking to you now we have upgraded all processes, registration, screening and payment to an online platform. Basically, we have gone digital and that gives our students the comfort to apply for a scholarship and get registered from any part of the world.

We have scratch cards that enable you to access our website for the registration. This initiative has earned us commendation from parents and the students because it has eased the bottleneck.

How many students have you so far received payment in the 2018 scholarship disbursement?

Presently, we have been able to settle over 11,000 internal students to the tune of N940 million while 120 external students studying overseas have also received about N540 million respectively.

In view of this opportunity, what is your advice for Yobe students?

Well, my advice is for the students to obedient, demonstrate commitment, hard work and be good ambassadors of Yobe State wherever they find themselves. This is because Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has committed so many resources to the education sector. The state university has been upgraded; he has also established a college of medical science, and university teaching hospital. A number of schools have been completely renovated and re-equipped to meet modern standards.

The students should know that while other states are battling to pay salaries Yobe State is not experiencing such. Salaries are paid promptly paid, pension arrears for the retirees as well as students scholarship are promptly attended to.

Recently, the board experienced a series of transfers, what is responsible for this?

Transfer of staff is not a new thing in the civil service. It is a process you signed up right from the day you accept employment. We have only carried out some adjustments to accommodate and inject new hands in line with our desire to drive the recent migration to online business.

There have cries by students over non-payment alert, what informed this development?

Whoever complains about not getting payment alert is probably having challenges with his /her account BVN or has given us wrong account details. You know we are very conscious of being transparent and thorough in screening details supplied by students. We have established an office that attends to complaints and makes amends wherever necessary.

What’s your opinion about the administration in the state?

Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has demonstrated all the qualities of leadership. The glory of the successes recorded by the board goes to him. Go around and sample opinions about the scholarship board, you will discover that parents and students are all smiling. I want to use this medium to thank Governor Gaidam for showing concerns about the plight of our students who are the leaders of tomorrow.
