Public primary schools’ head teachers in Lagos State looked gorgeous in their dresses at the end of year party, which held at the Grandeur Event Centre last Thursday.

They wore matching traditional outfits as chosen by each of the 20 Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) for the party organised by the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LSUBEB) and enjoyed a convivial atmosphere with top government functionaries in the education sector.

The teachers had every reason to be happy. Chairman of the Association of Public Schools Heads of Nigeria (AOPSHON), Mr Jeremiah Odusanmi, said they were happy that the Lagos State government had acceded to their call for primary school teachers to terminate their service at Level 17.

He promised that the head teachers would remain commtted to their work to pay back what the government had done.

“We, as headteachers, will continue to dedicate ourselves and be more prudent in the management of our schools,” he said.

Odusanmi, however, urged the government to increase running cost to primary schools from the present N20,000.

“We want speedy action on the increase in running cost, inter-house sport allowance, and training of security personnel. We want science teachers to be paid according to what is given to their counterparts in secondary schools,” he said.

On his part, chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Lagos State Wing, Adedoyin Adesina, called on the government to employ more teachers to fill the acute shortfall within the system. He particulary urged the government to consider employing non-teaching members of staff in schools who have got requisite teaching qualifications as teachers.

“We want to appeal to the government to recruit more teachers, more so with regard to the introduction of specialization of subjects teachers (which requires more teachers to achieve). We have some non-teaching staff that are very good. For instance, in my school, a non-teaching staff has gotten three commendations where some teachers have none. She is a non-teaching staff that needs to be converted to teaching staff,” he said.

Adesina thanked the Lagos State government and the SUBEB for being responsive to their needs and for the many innovations of the past year, including quality teacher training, and the clearing of all promotion backlogs.

In his speech, the SUBEB Chairman, Dr Ganiyu Sopeyin, thanked the head teachers for their hard work in 2018.

He said the introduction of subject specialisation was aimed at improving quality of teaching and learning.

“The noble idea of subject specialisation in primary schools initiated by her Excellency, the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, will go a long way in boosting teaching and learning,” he said.

He also described the promotion to Level 17 as an important milestone in the primary school sub sector and promised that the government would look into the other demands.

Chairman, Association of Education Secretaries of the LGEAs, Mr Olalekan Majiyagbe appealed to the government to look into improving the salaries of Education Secretaries, which he said was insufficient at N172,000 monthly.

Lending his voice to the call, NUT Chairman, Adesina, also urged the government to consider severance benefits for Education Secretaries, who can only attain to the highest Level of 16, which means they may supervise Head Teachers, who are even up to Level 17.

In her remarks, the Dr Adebule, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Deputy Governor’s office, Mrs Yetunde Odejaiye, assured the teachers that their dedication would not go unrewarded.

“I enjoin you to continue to be diligent and dedicated to your work. We will continue to invest in you and your welfare,” she said.

Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, represented by Mr Abiodun Oni, urged the head teachers to continue to work hard.
