Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, has stated that the institution would rank best in Nigeria come 2019.He said this during the maiden Robotics Competition (RC) recently held at the institution. According to him, the lecturers and entire UNILAG community work as a brand to create and develop students who would better the lot of the nation and the world at large.
“Our students have come up with robotics that would go to the mining area with sensors to make work easier and improve the nation’s innovative ideas. Aside the institution being a brand, there are lots of value adding programmes going on. Our students are one of the best in the world and this is evident in all they have accomplished at global competitions. So in 2019, the institution would not only rank best in Nigeria but also the first five best university in Africa, even in the world, our ranking would go up because we’re not sleeping,” he said.

He further said the RC would be a yearly competition and at such requesting support from companies and corporate organisations. “It is also a means of marketing for the companies as they invest into the ventures of our students. We want to expose our students and make them relevant not just locally but globally. Our students have skills and potentials and we are ensuring that they thrive in their endeavours as they have been excelling even in global competitions.”

The competition, which was organised by the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Laboratory (AIRoL) of the institution and tagged: Maze Quest, saw all 12 teams attempt to get their robots successfully through a complex maze but ‘Team Override’ comprising of Okafor Chukwuemeka 400level Mechanical Engineering student, Oluwatimilehin Tayo 400 level Electrical Engineering student, Ogunbiyi Eyitayo, 400level Computer Engineering and Adewunmi Joseph 400 level Electrical Engineering student, eventually emerged winners.

A panel consisting of Professors Abiodun Musa, Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), Ayo Oyediran, Dr. Sunday Adetona and Fasina Ebun, from the Faculty of Engineering, UNILAG, judged all 12 teams.

According to Prof. Musa, they were judged based on the software and algorithm used in their robot design, simplicity, cost-effectiveness, functionality of the robots, the understanding of the problem, teamwork, as well as the creativity and accuracy displayed in their robot design.

“The winning edge for the group was hinged on the sophistication of their design, as well as their understanding of the problem. They were able to interface about two different sensors: colour sensors, ultrasonic and distance measuring sensors. They also had the knowledge of how to control the wheels, and they had absolute packaging of the concept, with good understanding of the theoretical meaning. We also observed their own robot was able to complete the maze” he said.
