Chief Emmanuel Ijewere, Chairman, Nigeria Agric Business Group, has reawakened Nigerian youths of the need to rise up and take advantage of vast opportunities around them with the intent of reforming the country.

According to him, advocacy for youth representation in the scheme of things, especially politics should not be about sitting back and wait for things to happen but through active participation.

Ijewere who made this appeal over the weekend at the launch of a book titled: ‘Beyond Rhetoric’, written by the Chairman of Baywood Foundation, Emperor Chris Ibe Baywood regretted that the country is still following the old order simply because those who are at the helm of affairs in the country have failed to give up power to youths.

According to him, “No-one will willingly relinquish power to the youths, you need to grab it. Ask yourselves, in 2019, do we want to continue with the old order? Nobody will give you anything. Youths have to make it clear that failure to invest in them portends no future”.

He recalled that the President of France, Emmanuel Macon would not have succeeded if his fellow youths didn’t stand to support him, noting that the youths should seek counsel and take advantage of it to reform Nigeria.

“Countries did not rely on affirmative action but on direct actions,” Ijewere who was Chairman of the occasion tasked youths.

In the same vein, the Chairman of the Foundation, Emperor Ibe Baywood said the book was his contribution to humanity, saying that Nigeria is a talking nation, with no action.

He noted that ‘Beyond Rhetoric’ is challenging the mere rhetoric of Nigerians and giving a solution which lies in the ‘affirmative action.

Baywood who frowned at the unending blames on youths for vices such as kidnapping, armed robbery, unemployment, suggested they should be given the power to be involved in policy making and decisions that will shape their own future as it obtains in developed countries.

“We have not given them enough chance to show their talents and capacities. We must take cognizance of the underpowered youths in society; it’s dangerous if we neglect them. It’s very difficult to empower yourself in the midst of hopelessness. The government should rise and help the youths,” Baywood stressed.

In his Keynote Address titled, Between Essentialism and Despondency’, the Country Director, Plan International Nigeria, Dr. Hussaini Abdul who said he has been involved in youth issues in the last 10 years, noted that issues concerning them have been key conversation globally.

“Africa greatest reasons is its youths population, they can surmount the challenges ahead.”

However, he regretted the huge misconception and fallacies about youths saying they have been criminalised and marginalized and that the political parties have failed to give them the platform to make progress.

The book reviewer, Professor Patricia Dali said affirmative action can always be merged with direct action to give our youths opportunities to take leadership positions.
