The Nigeria Education Research and Development Council (NERDC) and the Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC) with support from Google has commenced a process for the adoption of online safety courses in Nigerian school curriculum.

The online safety curriculum is to teach the Nigerian child the fundamentals of digital safety to explore the online world.

The Executive Secretary of NERDC, Prof Ismail Junaidu, speaking yesterday at a workshop for the development of the curriculum in Abuja said the fundamental purpose is to ensure the safe and responsible use of the internet among young internet users as they explore, maximize and utilize all the benefits the internet offers.

Represented by the Director of Library and Information Centre, Dr Nnanna Eleri, he said developing the online safety curriculum for Nigerian schools is an effectual strategy since many young minds can be reached through the school system

“It is expected that at the end of this exercise, we would come up with key components and features of the proposed curriculum,” he said.

The CEO of PPDC, Nkemdilim Ilo noted that many devices used today have internet capacities and children have access to them, saying “we have a situation where we have lots of negatives and there are no rules of engagement and no censorship.”

“We felt we can partner government on how we can empower our youths to know how to interact and relate when they find issues they do not understand,” she stated.

She said with the increase of cyber bullying, fraudulent bills and sexual predators, the need to protect children online becomes necessary.

“One of the best ways is training around the country and making it a mainstay and the way we can do that is through education by inculcating it into what they learn, just the way they learn mathematics, and any other subjects,” she added
