Pet names and nicknames are a staple in a lot of relationships, both romantic and platonic. Girls have been known to call their girl friends ‘babe’, and or men calling their group of guys anywhere from ‘dude’ to ‘bro’. Shorthand names and terms to refer to people you’re close to is one of those endearing human quirks that the only species who has mastered language has. It’s sweet, no matter who you’re saying it to.

Some terms of endearment can cause confusion, however, especially if you’re not sure what they mean or what your relationship with the person is. ‘My love’ can be a confusing pet name to figure out. What does it mean when a guy opts for using ‘my love’ rather than, say, ‘baby’ or ‘babe’ or ‘sweetheart’?

Women across all the lands and sea have turned to the internet to help decode what guys are trying to say when they call a woman ‘my love’. Like most things, it all depends on the context in which the phrase is being said. Is he a new boyfriend? A long-term partner? Are you just friends? Don’t worry, this will help you start to figure it out.

1. He loves you
If you’re in a bit of a long-term relationship, at least six months deep, he’s probably saying that he loves you without saying that he loves you. Men can have trouble communicating their feelings, and nicknames and pet names are an easy way to show that they feel close to you and enjoy the intimacy.

Saying ‘I love you’ can be a big step for guys, so they might start to show it in little ways before actually taking the plunge and saying the big three words. ‘My love’ is a close second. To figure out exactly what he’s trying to say, you can always sit him down and have the big talk. If he’s in love with you, it’ll be a relief if you bring it up first so he doesn’t have to do it.

2. He likes you, but ‘my love’ isn’t a serious pet name to him
If you’re in a relationship that’s still in the budding stages and he says ‘my love’, it could be a pet name that he’s used in past relationships, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s in love with you. ‘My love’ doesn’t always mean that the guy who says it is hopelessly head over heels in love with you. It’s also a popular term of endearment in many different countries and regions.

When he says ‘my love’ to you, it could mean that he likes you quite a bit, but that, colloquially, the term doesn’t carry the same weight as saying ‘I love you’. Maybe he even heard it in a movie and thought that is sounded nice. If it’s still a new relationship, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Try playing a game to see what each other’s favorite pet names are. It’ll likely turn out ‘my love’ is at the top of his list.

3. He uses it for everyone
If you’re just friends and a guy calls you ‘my love’, it probably means that it’s a casual nickname that he uses for all girl friends. He might be from somewhere that saying ‘my love’ to your casual friends. Observe how he is around his other friends the next time you’re hanging out in a group.

If he uses ‘my love’ with some of them as well, he probably doesn’t mean anything heavy by the term. So, if you’re trying to figure out if one of your guy friend is secretly in love with you and trying to communicate that, you might have to decode something other than his casual use of the term ‘my love’.

There you have it
Guys can have a plethora of reasons for all the things that they do that women can’t seem to figure out. Nicknames can be one of the hardest mysterious to uncover. It’s always better to ask what it means rather than worry over something that might not be a big deal. But, at the same time, you don’t want to dismiss something important to him without meaning to.

Your long-term boyfriend might not be ready to say ‘I love you’, or he may just be picking up an endearing pet name that he heard in a movie or in the numerous British television shows he’s been secretly watching on Netflix. If anything, you can start saying it back and see how he reacts.
