The State Nutrition Officer, Directorate of Family Health and Nutrition, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Mrs Olubunmi Braheem, has advised nursing mothers to jettison the idea of giving water to infants while practising exclusive breastfeeding.

Speaking during the investiture ceremony of Breastfeeding Guardians, held in Lagos on Wednesday, Braheem said there was enough nutrients in the breast for the child to survive if the mother practised exclusive breastfeeding.

She said the essence of selecting breastfeeding guardians was to ensure that all the children in the state aged between 0 and 24 months survived and developed in good nutritional status.

“What we are advocate for is that exclusive breastfeeding on its own has many advantages, it is a complete meal and it is enough for that child at the first six months of life.

“The percentage of water in the breast milk at that time is more than 70 per cent, the child has got enough water at that stage. It is very cheap and readily available,” Braheem said.

She also advised breastfeeding mothers to start weaning the child from six months as a way of transition from exclusive breastfeeding.

The Lagos State Team Lead of Alive and Thrive in Lagos, Dr Uche Ralph-Opara, also called for more attention to the first 1,000 days of the child’s life, stressing that early breastfeeding is capable of addressing malnutrition.

Ralph-Opara said that a lot of money being spent to treat malnutrition could be avoided if the child was giving breast milk immediately after birth and exclusively breastfeed for six months without water or herb.

“So the question is why are we wasting a lot of resources on treating malnutrition when it can actually be prevented? We want are using this Breastfeeding Guardians to encourage pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to practice optimal Infant and Young Child Feeding,” she said.
