The Lufthansa Impact Week facilitated by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Centre (ESDC) under the auspices of Lufthansa Airline has been concluded as students who benefited from the programme exhibited innovative ideas.

According to the organizers the ideas can be brought to bear in different areas of human endeavours that cut across Education, Energy, Finance, Health & Environment, ICT, Transportation, Tourism, and Urban Agriculture.

Impact Week is a non-profit programme which unites people from a variety of countries to develop sustainable business models using Design Thinking. In its “Train the Trainer” sessions the programme affords beneficiaries the opportunity of being mentored by Design Thinking coaches while the actual “Impact Week” helped to develop new business ideas. The Impact Week is aimed at generating creative ideas as well as empowering young scholars to produce sustainable models using ‘Design thinking’ to help improve lives.

The Lufthansa Impact Week which kicked off on November 19, 2018, at the Univesity of Lagos’ Jelili Omotola Halls was facilitated by 26 experts drawn from across the world, and who were present to train students on Design Thinking and how the knowledge can be applied to proffer solutions to the numerous socioeconomic challenges of the country.

Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, Vice-Chancellor, in his address at the event, tagged #ImpactWeek2, which produced Team HouSoluTech as the winner, described the gesture of the 2018 Impact Week in partnership with Lufthansa as a noble pathway to self-discovery.

In the same vein, Dr. Sunday Adebisi said the initiative was part of efforts to help students and graduates to build the rare capacity and capability to create employment rather than looking for employment.

He added that there is the need to equip students with enormous skills and ideas before they graduate from the university, explaining that UNILAG is ready to change the narrative through the entrepreneurship and skill development centre.

According to him, a majority of the 33 million of unemployed people are youths, pointing out that the school produces about 15,000 graduates annually, saying that the implication is that they also joined the unemployment market.

Adebisi in his speech enthused that “For these reasons we at UNILAG is changing the narrative, we want to get our students and graduates equipped so that they can be job creator rather than being job seekers.”

He applauded Lufthansa for supporting the impact week which is designed to train the students to believe in themselves, create an idea and understands the problem in their environment as well as helping them to be able to provide solutions to them.
