Malam Adamu Adamu, Minister of Education has raised optimism that all challenges currently facing the education sector in Nigeria are all surmountable provided stakeholders collaborate and work as one.

The Minister and Visitor to the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) stated this recently in his address at the 32nd convocation of the college, saying that all stakeholders must work together in order to close ranks with the advanced countries.

Represented at the event by Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Onwuka, the Minister said, “The private sector must partner with government to improve the standard and quality of education in the country.

“All stakeholders must work together to surmount the myriads of challenges facing the education sector. To achieve the desired success, a partnership with the private sector is very key,” he added.

He tasked the management of Yabatech to work with relevant agencies, industries and researchers with the intent of generating concrete ideas and innovations aimed at tackling the prevailing challenges of underdevelopment.

At the ceremony where ordinary and higher diplomas were awarded to 9,348 graduates of the college, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Chairman, Governing Council drew the attention of the Visitor to the preparedness of the institution with requisite human and material resources for the much-awaited upgrade to a university status.

“Permit me also to respectfully inform you that the Federal Government and indeed the Federal Executive Council in 2007, approved the conversion of Yaba College of Technology to City University of Technology. Over a decade down the line, that approval is yet to be manifested in the life of this great college.

“Honourable Minister Sir, this college boasts of First Class facilities for learning and research, good quality lecturers with a large number of PhD holders, laboratories, workshops and a friendly learning environment that can deal with University status and education.”

The Governing Council Chairman in his submission said, “The College is more than ready to take-off as a university. It is, therefore, our ardent prayer that government through you takes a deliberate step to actualize this approval in the interest of the nation and the college in particular”.

Engr. Obafemi Omokungbe, Rector of the college informed the Visitor of the zero tolerance by the management of the college to all forms of anti-social vices and assured that the institution will continue to witness and sustain its current status as a trouble-free environment.

The highlights of the ceremony include conferment of fellowship awards on Dr. Abdullahi Baffa, Executive Secretary, TETFund; Engr Abubakar Isa and Mr Paul Gbadebo.
