The Ekiti State Police Command, on Tuesday, expressed sadness over the death of three policemen during a bank robbery that took place in Ijero Ekiti on Monday evening.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Ekiti State Command, Mr Caleb Ikechukwu, said the families of the deceased would be contacted before the identities of the fallen cops would be made known.

Three policemen and a civilian died in the robbery operation, which occurred at about 5.30pm on Monday.

The armed robbers, who accessed the banking hall after blowing up the security door, were said to have killed the policemen at the nearby police station and within the bank premises.

Ikechukwu, who spoke to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, said the command had recovered the Toyota car used by the armed robbers to escape from the robbery scene, just as he noted that efforts to track down the criminals had commenced.

The police spokesperson, who lamented the spate of bank robberies in the state in recent times, urged members of the public to always provide security agencies with information that could help in the prevention of attacks on people and institutions in the state.

He said, “We will contact their families to express our grief over the death. The police will not be deterred or shy away from the responsibility of protecting the lives and property of the people no matter what happens.

“Our men are really working. We are stepping up our intelligence gathering mechanism with the public and other sister agencies to ensure that Ekiti State is safe. We have recovered the Toyota car that was stolen by the bandits during the robbery.

“The bandits abandoned the vehicle along the Aramoko-Ijero Road and fled into the bush upon realising that the police were closing in on them. We are not stopping at that; our men from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and the Special Intelligence Bureau are combing the bush that we suspected they ran into.

“We are chasing them and the long arm of the law shall catch up with them. We are particularly pleased, because members of the pubic are cooperating with us. They are giving us useful information that will automatically help us in tracking down the robbers.”
