It is no longer news that Lagos State University (LASU) has been selected as a Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education by the World Bank, among other 16 universities across Nigeria.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, disclosed this recently at the maiden Long Service Award for Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff where 543 staff members who had served the university for 20 years and above were rewarded.

The ACE Project is the first regional results-based higher education project, which means that it is financed, based on results achieved by each Centre. The results centre on the achievement of quality and impactful education and research excellence.

These results (otherwise known as Disbursement Linked Indicators) include publishing in international peer-reviewed journals, quality benchmarks, including international accreditation, internship of students in the industry as well as enrolling Masters and PhD students.

Speaking on the development, Fagbohun said the Africa Centre of Excellence (ACE) III project is aimed at supporting more policy harmonisation initiatives in higher education across the African region and LASU would receive a minimum of $7m as a centre for the project, which is renewable after four years following impressive output and performance.

Chosen from about 154 universities that applied for the centre, the institution is expected to attract foreign students and foreign faculties.

ACE III focuses on increasing the quality and relevance of post-graduate education in selected universities through regional specialization, applied research, upfront University-Industry linkage and better Regional and International Coordination.

Centres will be selected as part of ACE III based on prior performance in ACE I. The selection criteria will emphasize on the productivity of Centers in meeting targets and also making regional impacts, strengthening institutional support, strengthening industry/sector engagement and commitment.

ACE III Centres, a World Bank project, is expected to have an Advisory Board, applicable measures to initiate institutional and governmental partnerships, encourage an increase in female enrollment and also plan for sustainability of the Centres after the project comes to an end, thus, alternative sources of revenue. Again, Centers involved in ACE III should have a foundational structure and a regional network with regards to faculty training and curriculum development.

Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the institution, Professor Adebayo Ninalowo, in an interview with Daily Independent said happening at the institution in the last three years were quite progressive and different from what the council inherited.

“Happiness and progress is written everywhere in a way that is historically unprecedented in the University

“It is a sharp contrast with what we inherited before the appointment of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Prof Olarenwaju Fagbohun,” he added.

The ACE project was launched in 2013 by the governments of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo, with support from the World Bank. The objective of the ACE Project is to promote regional specialisation among participating universities within areas that address particular regional development challenges and strengthen the capacities of these universities to deliver high-quality training and applied research.
