Igbinedion University, Okada, near Benin, is set to introduce three additional programmes to the existing 29 programmes in the institution, its Vice Chancellor, Professor Lawrence Ezemonye, said.

The Vice Chancellor made this known on Saturday at the 16th convocation ceremony of the institution.

Ezemonye said that the new programmes are: contemporary security studies, gender studies and climate change.

He added that the institution was now running 29 degree programmes, duly accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) under the seven colleges of the university.

He also disclosed that the institution had secured professional accreditation for Nursing and Midwifery Sciences, B. Pharm, as well as Engineering Sciences.

He recalled that earlier in 2018, 110 pharmacy students and 48 laboratory scientists were inducted by their various regulatory councils.

The institution’s Chancellor, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, said it was heart-warming that graduates of the university were excelling in their chosen careers.

He expressed optimism that the present set of graduates would give good account of themselves as products of the institution.

He said that the university had restructured its curriculum to accommodate skills and entrepreneurial training to prepare students for life after school.

He appealed to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve their dispute in the interest of students.

He advised the Federal Government to increase budgetary allocation to the education sector in accordance to UNESCO approved benchmark.

Prof. Sheikh Abdulla, the Pro-Chancellor of the institution, urged the Federal Government and ASUU to end the ongoing strike.

‘He said “no doubt, the nation cannot quantify the losses it incurs each time ASUU or the NLC goes on nationwide strike.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 736 graduands were awarded degrees in various disciplines, while three distinguished personalities were conferred with honorary degree.

NAN also reports that former Ghanian President, John Mahama, was awarded honorary Doctor of Letters, while Chief Dan Orbih, Edo Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party was conferred with Honorary Doctor of Political Science.

The Olowu of Iwo in Osun, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Akanbi, was conferred with honorary Doctor of Law.
