In order to boosts its internal revenue base in a time of serious economic contraction and also, ensure that bread is readily made available to staff and students at affordable prices, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State has established a bakery.
The bakery which is located within the University campus came on stream recently and is geared towards the production and sell of nutrients-fortified breads to members of the University community, reducing the cost of travelling to Abakaliki to buy such products.

Presenting the first fruits of the bakery to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba, the Director of AE-FUNAI Outlook Ltd, Mr. Austin Ugwuoke, noted that the bakery would effectively serve members of the University community by providing them with quality bread of all sizes and meat pies at affordable prices.

“Our marketing strategy is to produce quality bread of various sizes and sell same to staff, students and even members of the local community at affordable prices that will cover N300, N250, N200 and N100 per one, depending on the size”, he stated.
He explained that AE-FUNAI Outlook Ltd is a company established by the University authorities to generate revenue, adding that as part of its mandate the University Governing Council deemed it necessary to approve the establishment of a bakery within the campus.

He also noted that in the future the organization would liaise with the institution’s Centre for Entrepreneurship and Employability on the training of students in bakery business, and used the opportunity to call for the patronage of staff and students in order to sustain the business.

Ugwuoke further stated that the bread and other products of the bakery would be registered with the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in accordance with the extant laws guiding such business and also to prove the authenticity of the bakery products.
While tasting the bread in his office, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba expressed his happiness on the feat, noting that it was fantastic to have the University engage in such ventures which are in line with the goal of making the institution entrepreneurship-driven.

“This is one step forward towards where we want to be”, the Vice-Chancellor enthused.

He also used the opportunity to urge the Management of the bakery to ensure that quality was maintained at all times in order to satisfy its customers and in turn break even and maximize profit.
The ‘AE-FUNAI Bread’ is tastefully and hygienically baked, its quality is world-class and can match any other good-quality bread produced anywhere in Nigeria.
