High blood pressure affects about 25 per cent of all adults in the UK, according to the NHS.

The condition, which is also known as hypertension, puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

But, you could lower your blood pressure by regularly exercising, or by making changes to your diet plan.

High blood pressure patients should focus on exercises that will help the heart and blood vessels, according to charity Blood Pressure UK.

They should also avoid intensive exercises - including sprinting or weightlifting.

Exercises that quickly raise the heart rate should be avoided by people with high blood pressure, the charity claimed.

They put extra stress on the heart and blood vessels, and they aren’t as helpful as other types of aerobic exercise, it added.

Some high intensity activities could even be dangerous for hypertensive patients, and you’ll need to speak to a doctor before doing them.

Speak to a GP or nurse before doing weight lifting, squash, skydiving, sprinting, or scuba diving, said Blood Pressure UK.

“Different kinds of exercise and activity have different effects on your body,” said the charity.

“Aerobic activity is the type that helps your heart the most.

“Other forms of activity are less helpful. For example, you should not do any exercise that is very intensive for short periods of time, such as sprinting or weightlifting.

“These kinds of activities will quickly raise your blood pressure, and put unwanted strain on your heart and blood vessels.

“Activities such as scuba diving or parachuting can be dangerous if your blood pressure is not under control.

“You will need a medical certificate from your doctor to start or continue doing them.”

If you’re looking for the best types of exercise to do with high blood pressure, aim for aerobic activities that are repetitive and include rhythmic movements.

Cycling, brisk walking, swimming or dancing are great exercise choices for hypertension.

Alternatively, simply mowing the lawn could have a positive impact on your blood pressure, the charity revealed.

Every adult over 40 years old should check their blood pressure at least every five years, said the NHS.
