Defeating Addiction. by SocratesJrUnn (m): 1:27am on November 6

It all started in a day. I've never smoked the cigarette before and never have I thought of smoking either. I terribly despise it because of the odour it comes with. It was during My first year in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka that I met Ebuka who became my close friend and compatriot.

I never knew Ebuka was into smoking until we finally got to stay together as room mates in Eni Njoku hostel. He said, "Nothing will happen to you, I've been taking this for years now and am I not normal?" And I nodded in affirmative to his question. He furthermore stated that, "By mere smoking this cigarette you would even be more brilliant, as I can see you determination for success. The White men and women that do take this ain't they normal and even more brilliant than Africans due to our Religious dogmatism?" And again I answered in the Affirmative.

After much persuasion by Ebuka, I decided to give it a try. And of course it wasn't easy at first for I would have coughed out My eye balls that has already been strained by much reading. Tears rolled through my eyes after the first trial but Ebuka said that was always how it was and that it was normal. And again, again, again, again and again I tried it and now I'm like an expert in the act of smoking. But right now, I'm tired if it, I just wanna go back to My old self but my new self says " It's too late" cried a youth.

What's Addiction?

Addiction is a brain disorder characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences.

One can be addicted to Food, gambling, engagement in sexual activity etc and examples of behavioural addictions are alcoholism, amphetamine addiction, cocaine addiction, nicotine addiction, opioid addiction, food addiction, gambling addiction, and sexual addiction.

Yesterday, I literally cried after seeing a young lady of about 16 or 17yrs old walking on the street insane. I don't know what might have caused it but from my observation it mustn't be far from Drugs. Although looking tattered and unkept I can still see her fair complexion and beauty... I wept. The leasing cause of mental instability and death in youth is drug abuse. Why would you engage in something that you're fully aware that it can take your mental health and even cause death. Addiction starts with sayings like, 'This is the last time I'll take this" from that to that and before you realize it, you're glued to it. Separate yourself from peers and those that can influence you to do things that are negative or are you addicted to them already? Seek for a counsellor or a psychiatrist then. It might seem nice today, you might wanna get 'high' today but the consequences are deadly.
'TRAMADOL' the famous sex energizer. I've seen and heard of cases of youths dying from the use of this drugs. They wanna act like sex machine and so that their lovers won't see them as a weakling and so they go for this drugs. If abused, it can end your life speedily just like the 19yrs old guy at Warri who took the drug in expectation for his girlfriend's visitation but he was disappointed by her and in do distant time, the drug took a toil on him.

According to a source in Wikipedia, it stated "Most individuals are exposed to and use addictive drugs for the first time during their teenage years. In the United States, there were just over 2.8 million new users of illicit drugs in 2013 (~7,800 new users per day); among them, 54.1% were under 18 years of age.[45] In 2011, there were approximately 20.6 million people in the United States over the age of 12 with an addiction. Over 90% of those with an addiction began drinking, smoking or using illicit drugs before the age of 18".

What manner of persons do you have as friends? Are they adding or subtracting from your life? Reason that out.

Wikipedia furthermore stated that,"Drug overdose is now the “leading cause of death for Americans under the age of fifty, killing more people than guns or car accidents, at a rate higher than the HIV epidemic at its peak”. In 2016, 63,632 people died of overdose, 66.4% (42,249) of which involved an opioid, 26.9% (17,087) of which involved a prescription opioid. Previous studies indicate an 87.7% annual increase of prescription opioid related deaths from the years of 2013 to 2016". Don't allow the FUN you're having now lead to your FUNERAL tomorrow. It is worthy to note that Addiction can be influenced by both genetic and environmental factors although enough information hasn't been gotten about this but Knesler and other Scientist have said that from Epidemiological study , "It has long been established that genetic factors along with environmental (e.g., psychosocial) factors are significant contributors to addiction vulnerability. Epidemiological studies estimate that genetic factors account for 40–60% of the risk factors for alcoholism. Similar rates of heritability for other types of drug addiction have been indicated by other studies.Knestler hypothesized in 1964 that a gene or group of genes might contribute to predisposition to addiction in several ways. For example, altered levels of a normal protein due to environmental factors could then change the structure or functioning of specific brain neurons during development. These altered brain neurons could change the susceptibility of an individual to an initial drug use experience. In support of this hypothesis, animal studies have shown that environmental factors such as stress can affect an animal's genotype.

One can also be addicted to porn as stated by the psychologists and from a sample conducted "There is only one representative sample to date concerning distress about sex video use. They found that of 10,131 women surveyed, 0.5% of women agreed with the statement that they were "addicted" to pornography; 1.2% (of 4,218 who viewed) when limited to women who say they viewed sex films. The comparable figure limiting to men who view sex films was 4.4%. This was without any clinical screening that should eliminate primary disorders (e.g., depression) or religious-based concerns"
Is there anyone you know that is gradually falling a prey to this monster called Addiction? Don't insult or abuse or waste time gossiping about them but talk to them positively, advise them and not abuse them because Addiction can also lead to suicide.
As I said earlier, don't allow your FUN today to lead to your FUNERAL tomorrow.
