BARCELONA have attempted to play havoc with Inter Milan’s preparations for their Champions League clash by leaving Lionel Messi’s fitness for the game clouded in uncertainty.

The forward has missed the last four games with a broken arm which was meant to keep him out for three weeks.

But on Sunday afternoon he was surprisingly named in Barca’s travelling squad for the game at the San Siro.

A story on the La Liga champions’ website confirmed that while Messi would travel with the team it would be without having been given the all-clear by the club’s medical department.

Just hours later however a post via the club’s Twitter page saw the Catalans’ record goalscorer omitted from the party which will fly to Italy.

The latest development on Monday has seen Messi reinstated in Barcelona’s squad but his fitness for the game remains unknown.

Other injured players Thomas Vermaelen, Sergi Samper and Samuel Umtiti have meanwhile been omitted.
Messi was not due to return before the upcoming league game against Real Betis after he fractured a bone in his right arm in the win over Sevilla in October.
Though Barca have won each of the four games Messi has been absent for, manager Ernesto Valverde has been left unimpressed.

The Argentine has missed the last four games with a broken arm.

He said: “I think we all play better with Messi in the side. We will see how he is in training with regards to the Inter game this week.

“It’s only been two weeks since the injury. It’s early, we’ll wait. We are cautious because we want him to recover fully, without any problems.”

Victory for Barcelona in Milan will see them secure progress to the last-16 as winners of Group B with two games to spare.
