The removal of fibroids is also known as a myomectomy surgery. Women with one or more fibroids may choose to undergo a myomectomy surgery to relieve some of their symptoms. Mayo Clinic states that common symptoms of fibroids include heavy bleeding, strong menstrual cramps, frequent urination, constipation, and back or leg pain.

If the symptoms become too intense, or if the fibroid is causing health issues for the woman, then a myomectomy is discussed. Women can opt to have an abdominal myomectomy, a laparoscopic myomectomy, or a hysteroscopic myomectomy, according to the Mayo Clinic. Depending on the woman’s choice and the doctor’s recommendations, a surgery type is scheduled.

The Mayo Clinic also describes different recovery times for each of the surgery types. On average, women undergoing an abdominal myomectomy have a recovery time of four to six weeks. A laparoscopic myomectomy comes with a recovery time of two to three weeks, and a hysteroscopic myomectomy comes with a recovery time of a few days.
