WINTER weather is expected to set in soon to the displeasure of our bodies, with many people already succumbing to bouts of coughing and sneezing. Why do you cough more at night and how can you stop it?

Winter colds are a nuisance to many people during this time of year, with runny noses and constant throat clearing causing daily frustration.

Coughing is a bodily defence system designed to expel unwanted material from inside the lungs or throat.

During the day, coughing can be annoying at the best of times but when you’re trying to sleep, coughing can start to seriously affect your life.

Coughs have a bad habit of getting worse at night but thankfully there is an easy fix or two.

Why do you cough more at night?

During the day, people are much more aware of their bodily needs, frequently eating and drinking, or clearing your throat as they need.

At night the body does none of this, so fluid buildup inside the throat or lungs is not cycled out by drinking, eating or throat clearing.

Lack of water can lead to a dry throat during the night and other fluids can drip into the throat which also causes irritation.

This means you may wake up frequently with a need to clear your throat, cycling out anything which may have settled inside.

Coughing at night is the result of both dry air and pooling bodily fluids like mucus.

The best way to combat these is to ensure you are adequately hydrated, or you are thinning out mucus with added moisture.

However, it is worth noting sometimes coughing is good - if you are recovering from a cold or virus, a cough is the body relieving itself of the remnants.

Drinking is the best way to prepare your throat for the night, so staying hydrated through the day and into the evening is vital.

Having a glass of water on your bedside table is a good course of action, but drinking too much can make you need to visit the toilet, ultimately a hassle at night.

Cough drops are also a viable option, as the can soothe irritation and quell your need to cough.

If you have a persistent cough, visiting a doctor and getting some prescribed or over-the-counter advice is possible.

Some nighttime coughs are plain bothersome but after they last for more than three weeks, they can be an indication of serious illness.

The NHS recommends you consult a doctor if you have a cough lasting more than three weeks, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, swollen glands or trouble breathing.

If you cough up blood, the NHS recommends urgent medical advice.

Serious illnesses can initially present as a serious cough, such as lung cancer, but normally prolonged coughs are an indication of allergy or a persistent virus.
