Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested Akpan Samuel and Ani Chukwuma for allegedly robbing motorists and commuters plying the Lekki -Epe Expressway .
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, in a statement on Sunday , said the suspects specialised in robbing commuters in traffic, adding that in a bid to rid the state of criminal activities, the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi , had mobilised operatives of the command to the area where the suspects were arrested .
Oti said, “Motorists plying the Lekki / Epe Expressway will now heave a sigh of relief as two notorious armed robbers, who specialised in robbing commuters , Akpan Samuel and Ani Chukwuma , were nabbed on Monday, October 29, 2018 by operatives of the command led by the Divisional Police Officer, Maroko Division , CSP Isah Abdulmajid.
“During interrogation , the suspects revealed that their modus operandi was to mount the pedestrian bridge at Maruwa Bus Stop, Lekki / Epe Expressway . At that vantage position , they monitor the traffic and carefully select their targets. They , thereafter, swoop on their targets and rob them of their valuables by means of a big hammer used in smashing side glasses and windscreens of drivers , who refused to roll down their glasses when commanded to do so.
“The hammer and an improvised pistol that appeared like a perfect prototype of a Berratta pistol were recovered from them. Their activities were a source of concern to the command thus the CP Lagos directed the DPO to mobilise all assets at his disposal to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the hoodlums. The CP assured Lagosians that the activities of this set of criminals would soon be a thing of the past as the command had increased surveillance along all routes with heavy traffic. ”
The PPRO added that the suspects had been remanded in the Ikoyi Prison after their arraignment at the Igbosere Magistrates’ Court 10 on Thursday, November 1 , 2018.
