Step aside if you can’t stop insecurity, SDP tells Buhari

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to take urgent steps to arrest what it called the ravaging insecurity in the country.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Alfa Mohammed, in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday said Buhari should consider stepping aside if he couldn’t take the steps for the alleged failure of his government to make the country safe for the citizenry since he was elected for the task over three years ago.

The party said it was high time the president find lasting solution to the incessant killings.
While condemning the killings and destruction of properties, especially in Kaduna and Plateau states, the statement pointed out that leaving the lives of innocent Nigerians at the mercy of frustrated, wicked and heartless men for years amounted either to total disregard for the sanctity of the lives of the citizens or lack of capacity to find lasting solutions to the evil.

The SDP also enjoined the Nigerian security organisations to always apply rule of engagement in their attempts to control the conducts of civil protesters.
“We feel that the number of casualties recorded during the security agents’ encounter with Shiite religious sect’s protests in two Abuja suburbs, Zuba and Mararaba, could have been avoided if rules of engagement with civilians were observed adequately.
“Although we commend the efforts of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies at securing lives and property, we demand that innocent lives be protected at all cost and at all times. In the same vein, the Shiites and of course every civil society willing to engage in peaceful protest should always do so within the ambits of law,” the statement further read.

SDP gets one House of Reps member, says more expected

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) says Ahmed Abu, the member of the House of Representatives for Mokwa/Edati/Lavun in Niger State, has joined its fold.
Spokesperson of the party, Alfa Mohammed, in a statement he made available to journalists on Thursday, said SDP was expecting more federal lawmakers to join it in the next 48 hours.
According to the spokesperson, the party has submitted Mr Abu’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a substitute for its candidate in his constituency.
“Hon. Ahmed Abu, member representing Mokwa/Edati/Lavun has defected to the Social Democratic Party, SDP. His name has been submitted to INEC as the party’s substitute candidate for Mokwa /Edati/ Lavun Federal constuency,”he stated.
When PREMIUM TIMES reached out to Mr Mohammed to get the details of the candidate replaced and why, he said the candidate withdrew for personal reasons but did not give the name or any other details.
Mr Abu was a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House of Representatives.
He is the son of the late Isah Mokwa, a popular grassroots politician and political adviser to late Governor Abdulkadir Kure.

PDP’s “baggage” will not allow its candidate perform — Donald Duke

Mr Donald Duke, the Presidential Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) says the PDP “baggage” will not allow for good performance if its candidate emerges as President in 2019.
Donald Duke
Duke told newsmen on Thursday in Lagos that no matter how good a candidate’s intentions are, the person cannot perform is he becomes President on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Recall that Duke was a 2019 presidential aspirant of the PDP, but left to pick the SDP ticket.
“Even if I had emerged as the PDP presidential flag bearer, and win the election, the huge baggage the party carries will not allow me to do well.
“The corruption is huge. You need to be completely unshackled to perform amidst such obstacles without being pulled down,” he said.
Duke said that the baggage talk was not to score a political point, but a fact he knew, being a former staunch member of the PDP.
“The PDP presidential candidate, Abubakar Atiku, is like an elder brother to me. I have known him from when I was 12 years old. The APC is not completely left out of the baggage. Hence, the need for Nigerians to change the culture of PDP and APC.
“You can see that President Muhammadu Buhari, with his stern stand on corruption, is still finding it difficult to navigate smoothly because it is the same corrupt persons that we are still battling. They simply joined APC from PDP,” he said.
Duke, a former Governor of Cross River, said that apart from Buhari, he is the only candidate among the 76 running for presidency in 2019 that had a pedigree of being the head of a state.
He said that he joined the SDP to provide Nigerians with an alternative platform which would be a viable option.
“2019 is around the corner. The choice that Nigerians make is what they have to live with,” he said.
He, however, said that his campaign would be issue-based, devoid of mudslinging, pointing out that it was the mudslinging campaign in 2015 that contributed to PDP losing the election.
“I hope we don’t descend into what happened in 2015, as I can see it coming again. We should talk about things that affect us. Those are levels we should elevate our campaigns to,” he said.
The SDP presidential candidate urged the media to play the role of arbitration and use its powers to censor unpalatable campaign speeches or messages.
On endorsement, Duke said that he needed the support of Nigerians rather than that of an individual.
He urged Nigerians to vote wisely and hold their leaders accountable for their actions. (NAN)
